The industrial area “Industriegebiet Nord” in Freiburg

Freiburg's industrial area “Industriegebiet Nord” is the oldest and largest contiguous industrial area in the city of Freiburg, with an area of more than 300 hectares. It is located north of the city, approx. 4 km from downtown and borders the Mooswald, Brühl and Zähringen districts. More than 12,000 employees from 510 companies work here. IG Nord is characterized by its industrial, commercial and service companies. It is also the location of important scientific and research institutions. In addition to the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Freiburg, there are five Fraunhofer Institutes, the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology and the BioTechPark Freiburg based in the industrial area. The industrial area is also the location of the Messe Freiburg. In 2014, the "Green Industry Park Freiburg" project began, aiming to develop IG Nord into a forward-looking, sustainable, energy and resource-efficient industrial area with a nationwide model character. In addition to the City of Freiburg project partners, badenova, Fraunhofer ISE and FWTM, local companies are also involved with the project. Since 2018, IG Nord is the location of the "Blooming Industrial Areas - BIG" project.
